Chapter Fourteen

“It reeks of orgasm and hormones,” Isabelle says as she walks into my room. “Had fun?”

I straighten my hand over my blanket, making sure it’s properly folded and neat. I’m not used to the beds here, preferring my futons. Standing, I face Isabelle, doing my best to not let guilt get to me. “It was Nicholas. He’s my true mate, too.”

Isabelle pauses. She folds her arms across each other, then leans on the doorframe, her features blank. It takes a couple seconds before she shakes out of her shock and says, “Sorry, what?”

“Nich—”

“I know what you said,” Isabelle continues. “I just can’t believe it. You’re telling me that you have two true mates.”

“Three, actually.” I tuck my hair behind my ear, wondering why Isabelle is taking this so hard. I’m recovering from the experience Nic gave me, and my introvert side wishes to be left alone so I can distract myself with sorting out the stuff in my room. But… Isabelle is here to pull my attention back to what had happened.

“Huh?”

“Carter… Well, I haven’t touched him yet, but I think that—”

“Is that what Nicholas told you to get into your pants?”

“Told me?” I frown. “He didn’t try to convince me of anything.”

“Oh, sure. Nicholas is a saint. Fucking living embodiment of Santa and tries to live up to that old fart’s name.”

“Santa?” I shoot her a look of confusion. “Sorry, I don’t follow.”

“You don’t know who Santa is?”

“We do celebrate Christmas, but how does this relate to Nicholas?”

Isabelle snorts. “Never mind, Japs. You don’t get the reference.”

She leaves me befuddled, since I can’t follow her line of thought. Isabelle sighs, pinching the bridge of her nose before she says, “You can’t possibly have three true mates, sweet. I don’t care how much of a romantic you are, but if you think that, then you’re delusional. True mates are rare enough, but three? Impossible.”

“There’s been another shifter with three true mates before.”

“Who?”

“Osyn.” Frustration rises in me. I don’t have Isabelle’s support in this, and it hurts a little since I already consider her my friend. If she can just celebrate with me that I’m lucky enough to be bound to so many mates, things would just be a lot smoother. But no, she’s here to make life rougher for no good reason.

Isabelle stills her gaze on me. “You’re telling me you’re comparing yourself to the werewolf god. Osyn? Osyn! He’s pretty much Santa himself. A myth. A religious figure nobody’s ever seen.”

“I’m just saying it’s possible for me to be close to all those guys.”

“It’s hoot, that’s what. Nic was trying to play with your heart. That’s why he took you, making this place smell like—”

“He didn’t do anything of the sort,” I say. “Nic held himself back. He… He pleasured me. That’s all.”

“He was using you for fun time.”

“Why are you this bitter?” I ask. I should hold my tongue, but it wants to run.

“What?”

“You won’t let yourself believe in mate bonds.”

“That’s not it.” Isabelle scowls.

“You haven’t felt it like I have.
