Chapter Fourteen
âIt reeks of orgasm and hormones,â Isabelle says as she walks into my room. âHad fun?â
I straighten my hand over my blanket, making sure itâs properly folded and neat. Iâm not used to the beds here, preferring my futons. Standing, I face Isabelle, doing my best to not let guilt get to me. âIt was Nicholas. Heâs my true mate, too.â
Isabelle pauses. She folds her arms across each other, then leans on the doorframe, her features blank. It takes a couple seconds before she shakes out of her shock and says, âSorry, what?â
âNichââ
âI know what you said,â Isabelle continues. âI just canât believe it. Youâre telling me that you have two true mates.â
âThree, actually.â I tuck my hair behind my ear, wondering why Isabelle is taking this so hard. Iâm recovering from the experience Nic gave me, and my introvert side wishes to be left alone so I can distract myself with sorting out the stuff in my room. But⦠Isabelle is here to pull my attention back to what had happened.
âHuh?â
âCarter⦠Well, I havenât touched him yet, but I think thatââ
âIs that what Nicholas told you to get into your pants?â
âTold me?â I frown. âHe didnât try to convince me of anything.â
âOh, sure. Nicholas is a saint. Fucking living embodiment of Santa and tries to live up to that old fartâs name.â
âSanta?â I shoot her a look of confusion. âSorry, I donât follow.â
âYou donât know who Santa is?â
âWe do celebrate Christmas, but how does this relate to Nicholas?â
Isabelle snorts. âNever mind, Japs. You donât get the reference.â
She leaves me befuddled, since I canât follow her line of thought. Isabelle sighs, pinching the bridge of her nose before she says, âYou canât possibly have three true mates, sweet. I donât care how much of a romantic you are, but if you think that, then youâre delusional. True mates are rare enough, but three? Impossible.â
âThereâs been another shifter with three true mates before.â
âWho?â
âOsyn.â Frustration rises in me. I donât have Isabelleâs support in this, and it hurts a little since I already consider her my friend. If she can just celebrate with me that Iâm lucky enough to be bound to so many mates, things would just be a lot smoother. But no, sheâs here to make life rougher for no good reason.
Isabelle stills her gaze on me. âYouâre telling me youâre comparing yourself to the werewolf god. Osyn? Osyn! Heâs pretty much Santa himself. A myth. A religious figure nobodyâs ever seen.â
âIâm just saying itâs possible for me to be close to all those guys.â
âItâs hoot, thatâs what. Nic was trying to play with your heart. Thatâs why he took you, making this place smell likeââ
âHe didnât do anything of the sort,â I say. âNic held himself back. He⦠He pleasured me. Thatâs all.â
âHe was using you for fun time.â
âWhy are you this bitter?â I ask. I should hold my tongue, but it wants to run.
âWhat?â
âYou wonât let yourself believe in mate bonds.â
âThatâs not it.â Isabelle scowls.
âYou havenât felt it like I have.
